This first Carrier Deck shown below, known as the 3rd Deck, or Deck 3, is the mess deck, the men's
favorite deck which included the mess hall, coffee stop, soda fountain, mail room, barber shop. The wide variety
of meals and pastries were always something to look forward to. Deck 3 is located two levels "below" the Hangar
Bay Deck. There is no escalator to go to the mess hall to eat, only hatches and steps down and steps up to come
back. There was an escalator from the forecastle deck to the flight deck for the pilots and men who had to go back
and forth to work on the flight deck during the day.
